Brook, did you spend any time in Santa Teresa at all, or did you just pass through on a bus??? Santa is a brilliant place to hang out, and I'm not an American travel writer. It may seem quiet passing through, but actually spend some time here and you'll start uncovering some gems. Try Bar Gomez, Simplesmente, or outside Bar de Mineiro late at night. Have you ever been to Largo das Neves? Top of the Paula Mattos bonde line / 214 bus line? "Downtown" Santa seems to have little to offer, yeah, but scratch a tiny bit under the surface to find the vintage shops, etc, etc.
Happy to offer advice on the area / places to stay osullsarah@gmail.com

Loved your post specially when you said about not being affraid but be smart in Rio. It’s stupid, as in any country, to go walking down sketchy streets late at night.

I am brazilian, and I hate when someone tell Brazil is dangerous. How come? Anywhere is dangerous if you don't take care. The very first time I was in New York, on new years eve, a new-yorker-black-guy tried to rob my wallet in the middle of the crowd.

Rio is amazing. Come here and know the home of the olympic games of 2016.

This post has come just in time!! :) I'm moving to Rio in 2 weeks for the rest of the year. I already speak fluent Portuguese, but I want to speak kariokeis (carioquês) and see if I can do it well enough to convince the locals :P I've got so many "saudades" from Brazil; can't wait to get back :)
I can see the flat I'll be living in, in Urca, from that photo :D
Excellent tips!! I already lived in Brazil for a while, but need to get reminded of these little things. I met Brazilians in Europe and they found it very strange that Europeans go to the beach and lie on nothing but a towel flat on the beach. They find it "primitive" :P A cadeira is always the best way to blend in!
Até breve Rio!!
