As someone who is still studying Spanish, but also lived in Mexico City, I know the challenge of having a conversation where indigenous terms are sprinkled in. I personally enjoy the cultural enrichment of the indigenous terms. Often, they are more logical to me than the Spanish term. Great post! This is something that many people simply don't think about. I'm volunteering through Sustainable Bolivia now, and the Spanish teacher they've provided me with (yep, I need to learn that one first) is also fluent in Quechua. I've been able to pick up a few words here and there, but really wish I had time to devote to intensive study. Great idea for an article! This is something that many people simply don't think about. Just when I was making some headway with Spanish, I find out that millions of others speak indigenous languages. I know from studying Spanish that getting a basic handle on a language can give you some key insights into the culture. It is definitely worth the effort. Fascinating post.
