I work for an airline, and so saw my frequent layovers as an ideal time to study. The only problems with it being, not only the distractions of being in foreign cities but also fatigue and jetlag, trying to motivate yourself through moments of extreme tiredness is an art in itself.

Don't give up! Check out Evernote. It is better than Google Notebook anyway. Just look in the help for instructions on exporting/importing notes (so you don't have to do it manually again).

FYI: Google Notebook is stopping active development. This means no new features and no support. You might want to consider collecting your research using another site (like Evernote). If you already use notebook, then you can still access everything (for now).

Great list! I'd never heard of the Open University. How cool. There are also lots of local courses at local universities you can take while traveling--I intended to do one in Mexico about Mexican literature but it ended up conflicting with my schedule. If you speak the local language, definitely do some internet searching to find out if there's a course you'd want to take for a few months. Also, I'd add Global Voices to your internet research---check out the region you're visiting on the Global Voices site and see what bloggers there are talking about. This is also a good way to prep for interviews and conversations with local people.

Great list! The podcast option is something I never would have thought of, but is perfect for learning on the road. I would add "Take a Cooking Class" to this list. There are tons of options all over France alone for travelers to learn how to cook local specialties. I took a dessert class in Paris and it was one of the highlights of my time there. Plus, you get to take the recipes home with you!

Great post Craig! I have another suggestion to add, building your own website of things to study while traveling. I ran into the problem of frequent travel and studying, multiple times. I used to carry many, many books with me in my gear and finally got tired of the extra weight. This problem was what led me to do a website/blog. I began making a site of the information I was frequently studying or needing to "look-up" and placed it on my page...no more carrying of books! Well, I still carry books, but a few less at least.

Those are some great tips! I hadn't heard of Google Notepad. That is sweet...up to now I've been saving drafts in my Gmail for random thoughts and such...I'll be transferring them all to the Notepad now. This Internet thing just keeps getting better and better doesn't it... I'll also be sure to check out those podcasts. Thanks!
