The “geographical armpit” really does refer to, well, its geography. But of course the rhetoric was also intentional, as you can clearly see I am in a bad mood at this point of writing. I fully intended to paint an ugly mask on this city, which in certain ways deserves it, but as i mention earlier I plan to follow it up in another article describing its intrinsic beauty, which exists in some of it architecture, pre-Inca influences and most of all its people.

I think “armpit” was a geographical reference – but since the author was broke, it’s understandable for her to notice the ugly bits of Lima.

There’s plenty of squalor elsewhere in S. America.

As a Gringo recently relocated to Lima, I have also observed poverty here that I had only seen previously via television. It was my belief, however, that such situations existed in some other Latin American megalopolises. Am I incorrect, or aren’t there areas of unbelievable squalor in Rio, also? I don’t want to defend Lima, since I have now seen its flaws as you’ve shown. However, I do wonder if “landing in its (South America’s) geographical armpit”, as you described it, is a description related to its longitude and latitude or instead, possibly, hyperbole. Despite my criticism, I do agree 100% that the situation for the impoverished people in South America is much beyond what those from the USA can fathom. Even in the Appalachian Mountains, it appears there are more opportunities for success.
