I have attended a Japanese funeral where I did pass cremated bones to the next person in line with large metal chopsticks. I had no idea that the chopsticks customs differed in southern Japan, but interesting. As for foot wear, I stick to my Crocs-- they're harder to break than getas. Cheers. Use the lowest bowl near you and make sure the sticks aren't pointing at anyone (unless you wish them death). Also, never try to pass food to another person with chopsticks.
