i know it was a note of just one day but it felt there was an almost total lack of personal interaction with your Japanese colleagues, other than wait staff: eat lunch alone, dinner alone, work out alone, no mention of a joke or connection with anyone at the office.

I'm back in Cleveland, OH after 3 years in Kagoshima, and it was utterly nice - no better word to describe it - to read your article and remember what it was like all over again. Thanks Turner! Good to hear from you again!

I got all natsukashii reading this having recently lived for 2 years in Kagoshima. It's funny though, I always thought there were so many foreigners in Kagoshima city, but perhaps that's because I lived in the innaka where there really were almost no other non-Japanese! The southern islands there are stunning! Kyushu has some of the most gorgeous greenery I've ever seen. And hiking in Kirishima was amazing. Natsukashii!!!

Good Morning:

I read your posting with envy, having been stationed at Nomaike, Japan, just south of Kagoshima during the 1950's. I do have a request if possible. During my tour of duty in Japan I fathered a son. His name is Joji Matano, born November 1960 in Kagoshima-shi. His mother lived at 420 Shioya Cho Kagoshima-shi, Kagoshima-ken. For years I have been trying to locate him without success. Is there anyone I can contact in Kagoshima who may be able to try and locate him? I would appreciate any assistane.

Best regards,

Great read. I laughed when you mentioned the super thick bread for toast. The Japanese pancakes served at the kissa ten (cafe) are also as thick, and perfectly shaped.

Great article. It was especially interesting to hear the perspective of an expat not teaching ESL in Japan. I definitely got a sense of your personality and typical day. Thanks for sharing!

Turner-

It was great to get a peek inside your life. After reading so many of your articles, I felt like I knew you somewhat, but a day in your life is much more intimate. Also, love that ocean photo!
