Succinct and eloquent insights on tensions that have really vexed me— not only in France, Scotland, Ireland, and Guatemala, but also in Anaconda, Deer Lodge, and Lee Vining. #1 calls to mind Rilke and the American Romanticists; #2 I dealt with, peripherally and sloppily, in my first essay for Phil's class, which I should send you even though it is sloppy; #3 should be glued to every door on the campuses of some schools we have in common; in #4, "slurping and dripping" is perfect; #5 made me want to go back to Guatemala really, really badly. But I might go to Mexico instead, because that's where you are.

I stumbled across this post and I too lived abroad in France. Number 1 and 5 really hit home for me. Especially when the country did break my heart. I'm now healed and can go back. This was very well written and I am so glad to have read it.

Just echoing everyone else. What a great read! I think #3 is key for me. You shouldn't forgo your moral values, but you also can't impose your lifestyle and convictions on others. Let them observe how you live your own life. That alone speaks volumes and can get people thinking about changing their views. God Himself gives us all free will.
