I am astounded by some of the comments on here.
booshallmighty, your comment is ignorant and plain old stupid- how can you say all that we ask of non Westerners is to not bomb us? With people who really do believe that if you can’t speak English you should get out, rabid racism towards anyone who wears a head covering, and the overall disdain towards other religions and their customs?
Not to mention the absolute hell of forms, lines and waiting that migrants must go through to even get a legal job!

Yeah, I think Americans ask quite A LOT from their immigrants and if you can’t do a culture the honor of wearing a simple headscarf when you’re there, then maybe you don’t even deserve to travel there.

My fondest memory of 4 months spent in Israel was all those good looking girls in army uniform, that was a truly wondrous site…….!

I think you should mention somewhere on this list about confronting public lines. People in Israel will not form a line if buying food from any street vender, Push and shove policy to get to the front definitely applies.

Here are some less common facts about Israel that people may find useful… Israeli's can come across as abrasive but they don't mean anything by it. They don't always have a buffer between what they think and what they say. They are extremely hospitable people so try not to let this bother you. Israeli's habitually bud in line AND NO ONE CARES. On many occasions I would be waiting in line at a "burger ranch" (a typical fast food place) only to watch a family of 5 bud to the front of the line. Movies in Israel have intermissions. So half way through the movie, the screen will go blank, the lights will go on and everyone will leave the theater. This is very confusing if you're from North America. At first I thought "did I actually just pay for half a movie?" Don't worry, after about 5min the movie starts up again.

I have always wanted to visit Israel. I suppose if I were younger I may look into the program that got your there. But I would like to keep your tips and insight in mind for future visit to Israel. Thanks, I never realised any of these and I have read a lot about Israel.

What is expected of western visitors always amazes me. We must do this, we must observe that! Its all bollox ! When they come to the U.S or U.K all we ask of them is not plot mass murder against us. A lot of middle Eastern countries can't even manage that! Respecting other cultures is the single most important thing when visiting other countries. It works both ways though. If they respected our culture and achievements (which we all enjoy) I would happily oppress women while I was there. I would would even stone the bitch if so much as looked at another man. I would even make the effort and bring a machine gun to the beach. However, their intolerance of even their neighbors puts a nasty taste in my mouth. I won't be going anytime soon.

This is nice and all, but tame. Talk about what to eat at 2am (i.e. falafels) and what the party scene is actually like. As if kids researching studying abroad care about mainly about manners and getting directions…talk about bars, tipping, dating locals, etc. Come on, use that dazzling wit towards something clever and original

I went to Israel in December on Birthright (a program that allows Jews 18-26 all over the world visit Israel for a week at nearly no cost!) It was the best week of my life. It brought a new meaning to my life. Everyone with any interest should visit, and if you're a Jew under the age of 26, GO ON BIRTHRIGHT!!! You'll never find a better deal for traveling in the world.
